CyberMonk's Beginnings
moonkey player concept art by Valerie M.
It's the moonkeyning!
Hi! My name is Jeron! I saw the Github Game-off theme and immediately had an idea for a game. During the weekend of halloween I participated in a game jam with three other people from other schools. We had so much fun and hit it off so we decided right then and there that we should do another game jam together because we saw a lot of potential! Our team is unbelievably talented in art, audio, writing and programming, everything a game development team needs. Why wouldn't we stick together? As Team 2VC, this time around we added to the team an additional programmer so that we can double the features in half the time.
The theme for the Game-off is "moonshot" and I immediately thought of the idea of adding damage through dash attacks to the enemies to send them flying as high as the can sorta like how Smash Bros. works. I pitched the idea to my team and everyone was down for it. Later that day we hopped in our discord server and began planning and fleshing out what exactly would be our design, and within a few hours in the big jumble of fun that brainstorming sessions are, we came up with the idea for CyberMonk: Moonkey Mayhem. We took the core mechanic and all started spouting out what we thought of when we thought of moonshots. We flirted with the idea of baseball players and street-fashion cyborgs, but we decided that space monkeys are definitely the way to go. Within minutes our artist busted out a sketch of what she thought our monkey would look like and it hyped up our team even more!
within minutes our artist, Valerie, busted out a rough animation that is synced to 120 bpm so that we can scale it in code
and an idea of what our character looks like by Valerie
We began planning more mechanics and potential level designs based on the concepts, and came up with a 2d rhythm brawl platformer where the player would do combos to moonshot the enemy zombies into the sky.
Currently our project time frame is looking like this:
- Week of 11/1 - 11/7
- Prototyping
- Week of 11/8 - 11/14
- Brawler Mode
- Week of 11/15 - 11/21
- Brawler Mode
- Week of 11/22 - 11/28
- Level Design and Polish
- Week 11/28 - onward
- Further Story and Level Design
I'm excited for the future of this project and the potential of Team 2VC!
